A junior school in Leigh-on-sea is recruiting all parents and shoppers using a local co-op convenience store in an effort to raise some extra money for the school.
Pupils from West Leigh Junior School launched their ‘Community Card’ account with the Co-op food shop on London Road, Leigh-on-sea. The store is owned by Chelmsford Star, an independent co-operative that operates in Essex, and one which specifically benefits local groups and schools.
Chelmsford Star’s President, Pauline Dodd, said, “A third of the value of every purchase made in our stores comes back to the local community one way or another. Shoppers using one of our community cards tell us exactly where they want the funds they raise to go. There are hundreds of groups in Essex benefit from it.”
Assistant Headteacher for West Leigh Juniors, Mrs C. London, said, “We hope that the parents and guardians of our pupils will all get behind us to support this, as it is a way to earn extra funds for the school with no extra effort.”
The Community Card has won awards for its fundraising capabilities but is exclusive to Chelmsford Star, meaning the co-op branch in London Road is the only one in Leigh-on-sea that will accept it. The initiative works similar to a loyalty scheme, collecting the points of those supporting the school when they shop, however the co-op donates an additional 50% of whatever is raised.
