Chelmsford Star Co-op supports Fun Week in Melbourne

An annual fun week held over the first week of August in the Langton Avenue Scout Hut in Melbourne, was supported by Chelmsford Star Co-op.

The event provided activities for local children between the ages of 5 – 14 which included cooking, drama and games ending in awards being presented on the Saturday at a family hour.

Run by Sister Moira Anderson and a number of volunteers, various partners assisted with donations including Chelmsford Star who supplied free drinks and one of its local food suppliers Rossi Ice cream, provided ice cream for all. 

Book sale donations reach £1,000

The Quadrant department store in Chelmsford has a book case beside its restaurant where members of the public bring unwanted books to and chose books from for a donation.

Since its inception in August 2014, the book sale has now raised over £1,000 for local charities through the Charity of the Year scheme.

The nominated charity, voted in by the society’s employees, changes every year in May.

The book sale has raised £483 for The J’s Hospice, £423 for South East & Essex Central Mind and a total of £100 so far for current charity, Kids Inspire.

Local Food Hamper brightens up the day!

Thousands of people flooded into ‘The Only Way Is Local ‘ marquee at the recent the Food and Drink Festival at the Cressing Temple, where lucky Dawn Durrant of Chelmsford was selected as a winner of a much coveted hamper packed with Essex produced food and drink goodies.

The marquee was crammed with over 20 local producers, all who supply local co-operative society, Chelmsford Star who brand their local food collection under ‘The Only Way is Local’ branding.

Pokemon Go Friends Hit The Quadrant Department store, Chelmsford

Well over twenty two Pokemon are to be found in Chelmsford City Centre including two outside the front entrance of the Quadrant department store on Moulsham Street.

Pokemon Go, is an augumented reality mobile game by Niantic to be released globally, and has taken the world, including Chelmsford, by storm!  The game allows players to capture, battle and train virtual creatures, called Pokemon, who appear on device screens as though in the real world. Users of iOS and Android can download the game for free.

Star Co-op acquires a new food store

Chelmsford Star has just acquired a store from ‘My Local’ following the struggling convenience chains fall into administration in June.  

The Society snapped up the store situated on London Road, Leigh on Sea and opened within days of the deal on Friday 15th July, under The Co-operative Food, Leigh on Sea.

‘My Local’, formally Morrisons Local had laboured to gain a foothold in the convenience sector against strong competition from other operators such as the Co-op, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Chelmsford Star Co-op Supports Boswells in Volleyball World Championships

Local Co-operative Society, Chelmsford Star is supporting the Boswells school (Chelmsford) volleyball team at the International Volleyball Championships in Serbia this week. It not only sponsored the team bags and kits but raised a cheque for £240 from the Society’s Community Card Scheme which was boosted further after the school used the Society’s travel department too.

Chelmsford Star Co-op’s Funeral Division Signs Fair Funeral Pledge

In the last six months five co-operatives around the UK have signed the Fair Funeral pledge. East of England, Lincolnshire, Scotmid, Tamworth and Heart of England co-ops – a total of nearly 100 branches - have all joined with us in campaigning against funeral poverty.

Today we’re pleased to announce that Chelmsford Star Co-op has also signed the pledge. It has operated in funerals since 1936 and currently has seven funeral branches – Braintree, Broomfield, Danbury, Great Baddow, Ingatestone, Writtle, and Great Dunmow - based across mid-Essex.

British fashion brand, White Stuff, have joined our new season brand collection within the Chelmsford Quadrant Department store.
