Funding Freedom: A Co-op Grant gives Independence

Monday Apr 28, 2025

The Independence Clubs, a local Essex-based community-interest company (CIC), is dedicated to supporting adults with learning difficulties. They have received a generous donation of more than £3,000 from Chelmsford Star Co-op’s Community Fund. The funding will help them to expand their much-needed social clubs, giving members more opportunities to connect, develop life skills, and build confidence in a supportive environment.

The Independence Clubs, along with their sister-company Independence Projects, provides vital services across the region, offering day support, community engagement, and tailored activities that promote independence and wellbeing for adults with learning difficulties. With an increased demand for their services, the two companies have been working hard to enhance their offering and meet the growing needs of the community.

Representatives from Chelmsford Star Co-op recently visited The Independence Clubs in action and were deeply impressed by the dedication of the team and the positive impact the service is having on its members.

“Our Community Fund exists to support local organisations making a real difference, and The Independence Clubs is a shining example of that,” said Pauline Dodd, Director and Chair of the Membership Committee which allocates the grants. “Their social groups provide not just fun and friendship, but essential social development for people who often face barriers to inclusion. We’re proud to help them continue this amazing work.”

The awarded funds will go toward sustaining and expanding these clubs, enabling the CIC to host more sessions and provide additional resources to enhance participants’ experiences.

Independence Club received additional funding from a second grant provider, totalling a whopping £7,000 in support!

Andrew Denny, creator of both The Independence Project and Clubs, said: “This funding will make such a difference. Our clubs are often the highlight of the week for our members, offering a safe space to be themselves, learn new things, and feel part of something special. We’re incredibly grateful to Chelmsford Star Co-op for recognising the importance of what we do.”
