Legendary Troll Arrested Beneath Local Bridge, Ending Years of Shopping Disruptions

[Chelmsford] – Authorities confirmed this morning that a folkloric troll, long suspected of lurking beneath the Stone Bridge in central Chelmsford, has been apprehended, bringing relief to local residents, shoppers and business owners.

For years, the Stone Bridge, which serves as a vital connection between central Chelmsford and the once bustling ‘Stonebridge Quarter’ stretch of Moulsham Street, had been a point of frustration and trepidation for pedestrians. Historic reports of individuals being stopped and asked obscure riddles, along with occasional demands for money or goats, has deterred many shoppers from attempting to cross over – even in recent years.

“Finally, high street shoppers can visit this end of town in peace,” said local business manager Gino Muscat, who operates the Quadrant on the far side of the bridge. “Even the rumour of this creature has been a menace to commerce, and I can’t tell you how many potential high street shoppers we see turn away before they reach the bridge just to avoid the hassle.”

Authorities say they were alerted to the troll’s presence late last night when an unsuspecting jogger reported heckling from beneath the structure. “This gruff voice was moaning about the lack of people now coming into the city centre,” said Emily Smith, who was on her way to running a personal best. “He was angry about a lack of face-to-face interactions, claiming an app just doesn’t capture the fear in people’s eyes in the same way.” A swift response from the city’s police force led to the creature’s capture just after dawn.

A policeman commented that this offline troll was “much nicer than some of its online counterparts”.

Shoppers are encouraged to remain vigilant, however, as experts warn that similar creatures may be hiding beneath other city structures. “This is a victory, however we also recognise bridge-dwelling beings have a right to exist,” said Professor Evelyn Mortimer, a specialist in cryptozoology at Anglia Ruskin university. “Dedicated habitats are now being installed under suitable structures outside of town to draw them away from populated areas. Key features of these new Troll Zones include moss bedding, improved riddle acoustics, a dedicated goat lane and wi-fi.”

More updates will follow as authorities continue their investigation into potential mythical infestations elsewhere in the region.

The troll was taken into custody without incident. Officials confirmed that he will be transported to a secure holding facility specialising in folkloric detainees.

With the troll’s removal, city officials expect foot traffic across the Stone Bridge to increase significantly. The bridge has already been reopened, and celebratory discounts are being offered by many businesses to mark the occasion.
