Historic ‘Transfer of Engagements’ Proposed

Tuesday Jun 24, 2025

Today we are announcing a proposed transfer of engagements of Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society to join Central Co-op.

In a joint statement, Barry Wood, Chief Executive Officer of Chelmsford Star Co-operative and Debbie Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of Central Co-op said:

“This is an incredibly exciting moment for co-operation. During the UN International Year of Co-operatives, we have a shared vision to be a leading force in the co-operative movement, realising the transformative impact that co-operatives have on economies, communities and individuals. In an increasingly competitive marketplace, we believe that by harnessing our shared values we will build a stronger and more secure Society.

We welcome the proposed transfer and invite members to support this important moment which will deliver a future that continues to put members, colleagues and communities at the heart of everything we do.”

The proposed transfer requires approval by Chelmsford Star members at two Special General meetings which will take place in late July and early August. You can find the notice and agendas for the meetings here, along with a Q&A document that aims to provide you with the information you need to understand what a transfer of engagements is, the rationale for the recommendation and what it means for you as a Member and our Society as a whole.

If you have any questions on the proposed transfer of engagements that are not covered in the Q&A document, please contact Kevin Bennett, Head of Membership and Marketing. Email: kevinb@chelmsfordstar.coop.

To confirm attendance at the Special General Meeting, please email your membership number to the Membership Department here.
