Sisters are doing it for themselves

For over 20 years, Sister Moira and Sister Margaret of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre have been running an annual fun week at the Scout Hut on Langton Avenue, Melbourne. For most of that journey, Chelmsford Star Co-op have been right there besides them, providing all the refreshments.

This year, donations have also come from Cafe Deli, Savoursmiths, Shaken Udder and Rossi ice cream.

The popular week long event provides activities for young people during the summer holidays, when they might otherwise be bored or out on the streets causing mischief. Many of the children they’ve supported in the past have gone on to volunteer at the event, or now have children of their own attending.

Sister Moira said, “We moved here in 2003 and looked for how we could help out in the community, and what was needed. Our first activity week was so popular, we immediately realised it would become an annual event.”

The Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre is a Catholic female religious order that can be traced back to the 1300s, with members dedicated to a life of prayer, community and service.

Sister Moira added, “There is no direct link or religious aspect to our activity week, which can include cooking, crafting, dancing and other fun games. We’re just doing our bit to support our community during the school holidays.”

Volunteers from the Activity Week even came to reopen our Kings Road store following refurbishment in 2017.

Chelmsford Star has been supporting the event for over a decade.

The Activity Week has become an important event on the local calendar, with many families relying on it during the early weeks of the summer holidays.
